These chapters record the final division of the land among the remaining seven tribes.

We have already noted that the camp of Israel had been situated at Gilgal. Now the Tabernacle of Moses and the camp of the Israelites were removed to Shiloh, a more central town in the territory of Ephraim. Here it remained, throughout the period of the Judges, until the day of Samuel.

At this stage, the land had been conquered,[2] but seven tribes were yet without their inheritance. So the challenge went out “How long will you wait before you begin to take possession of the land?” Joshua gave directions for the subdivision of the land and in due course the land was divided among the remaining seven tribes.[3]
